The man, together with another activist from the wildlife organization “Wild Carpathians Initiative”, was in the area to investigate whether it had been affected by deforestation.
Several international newspapers have mentioned the incident, including The Telegraph.
The animal activist was flown to hospital after the attack, and is said to have been in a serious but stable condition.

Caught on camera
According to The Telegraph, the two activists should have expected the den to be empty, but the bear followed and pursued them through the forest. The German activist tripped and fell before being attacked.
The incident was caught on a wildlife camera. Spokesperson for the Polish Forest Service, Michal Gzowski, shared the images on X, formerly Twitter. He describes the incident as “the irony of fate”.
“Pseudo-ecologists have attacked foresters, rescue workers and policemen, and now these people are the ones who saved their lives,” reads the post.
“Will there be a Darwin Award?” Gzowski adds, referring to the Darwin Award given to people who have lost their lives unwisely.
Do too little
The “Wild Carpathians Initiative” has admitted that its activists should not have disturbed the animal, which usually goes into its den at this time of year.
Marek Józefiak from Greenpeace says in a statement that the authorities are doing too little to prevent the destruction of the forest.
– Poland is not doing enough to protect the Carpathians. Only three percent of the forest is protected, but the rest is deforested or built on.
He adds that there are only two areas with bear dens that are protected.
The wildlife organization has observed up to 40 trucks, loaded with timber, drive out of the area.
