Gerke and Berdien are still married: ‘Corona does not stand in the way of love’

Many marriages are canceled due to the corona crisis, but Berdien and Gerke Wassenaar from the Frisian Surhuizum knew for sure: their wedding day had to continue. But justified.

Love conquers all

“I am 28 weeks pregnant and I want to be a real family when the child arrives,” says Berdien. “And in times of uncertainty, love should be celebrated,” adds Gerke. “Love conquers everything, including corona.”

The couple met through Tinder. “It was love at first sight,” said Berdien. Last Sunday, they were told by their wedding official that their marriage could continue, but they had to choose between three options. At the town hall with a maximum of 11 guests, move the day for free, or get married at home with 11 attendees.

Beautiful house

“We chose the latter: at home,” says the bride. Didn’t they argue about that? “Absolutely not. We have a beautiful house, with lots of space. And the great thing was that the animals could now also be there. It was really great. So beautiful.”

The couple got married in the backyard and had beautiful weather. Only not all guests could therefore be there. “Only the witnesses and (in-laws) were present. We had to cancel other family members and grandparents.”

Or that it didn’t cause crooked faces? “No, everyone understood.” Only the dinner was canceled. “That was a pity. But otherwise we had a really beautiful day. We are so happy that we got married today.”

No pillow?

How did it go with the prescribed 1.5 meter distance? “I just kissed and held my husband though”, laughs Berdien. “But the rule applied to all guests. We were not kissed or touched by anyone.” How then are they congratulated? “Everyone yelled at the same time: Congratulations! It was really beautiful and moving.”

The brand new couple had not planned a long honeymoon because of the pregnancy. “We would go away for a weekend, but we are not going to do that.” They don’t mind very much. “We are now staying at home. We can now enjoy each other and the animals.”
