The Zurich City Hospital is planning a geriatric rehabilitation at the Waid location with ZURZACH Care.
As part of the development of the Waid campus into a lighthouse for geriatric medicine, the Zurich City Hospital and the ZURZACH Care Group are planning to open a geriatric rehabilitation clinic in 2023.
In parallel to the increasing life expectancy of people in Switzerland, the need for geriatric medical skills and services in acute medicine, rehabilitation and care is also increasing. As part of the service strategy and the urban aging strategy, the Zurich City Hospital is positioning the Waid site as Switzerland’s leading hospital in geriatric medicine.
In addition to emergency and basic care for adult patients of all ages, all services for comprehensive geriatric medicine are to be combined on the Waid campus.
Rehabilitation offerings close to hospitals and homes
An interdisciplinary coordinated and early rehabilitation is an important cornerstone in the medical care of older people. The City Hospital of Zurich used a public evaluation process to find a suitable cooperation partner for the establishment and operation of a geriatric rehabilitation facility close to the hospital and residential area.
The choice fell on ZURZACH Care, which, with 21 locations in Switzerland, specializes in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation in addition to prevention and reintegration. The City Hospital Zurich and the care centers of the City of Zurich have signed a declaration of intent with ZURZACH Care for project development.
Medical care for the elderly on the Waid campus
The geriatric medicine tasks on the Waid campus are being gradually developed by the members of the University Geriatrics Association (Zurich City Hospital, Zurich Care Centers, Zurich University Hospital, Zurich University).
The planned rehabilitation clinic will be embedded in the municipal care on the Waid campus and run in close cooperation with the University Clinic for Geriatric Medicine Waid and the acute and transitional care (AÜP) of the Käferberg care center. This collaboration enables innovative and cross-departmental care for the benefit of patients.
The planned clinic will be operated by ZURZACH Care. Around 40 beds are planned, which will be integrated into the existing buildings of the city hospital. Commissioning is planned for 2023 as part of the hospital planning.
