With an unusual donation campaign, GERB has joined in helping Ukraine. The former rulers helped deliver helmets to Ukrainian soldiers, with the protective equipment marked “From GERB”.
This was learned from a comical conversation between GERB leader Boyko Borisov and former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko. The two spoke during a congress of the European People’s Party (EPP), in which they participated.
“We delivered helmets thanks to his cooperation. He wrote “From GERB” on every helmet we delivered to our soldiers”, the ex-president addressed Borisov flatteringly.
“And without making noise, without showing off. We gave the money, they bought. We have not said a single word”, our former prime minister demonstrated modesty.
Poroshenko repeated to Borissov his invitation to visit Kyiv. The leader of GERB received the first such invitation, just before he was arrested in Bulgaria. Poroshenko himself left his homeland after the country’s authorities chased him on charges of treason.
“Boyko, promise me to come to Kiev. I know there was an incident, but our door is open,” said the former head of state. “They arrested me the other day,” Borisov complained to him. “I know. Maybe because you promised me you would come,” laughed Poroshenko.
The leader of GERB began to explain to him his opinion about the Bulgarian rulers: “They pretend to be pro-Western, but otherwise they are communists in the true sense of the word.” “Joking aside, I really connected with that. I completely understand what politically motivated persecution means,” the ex-president replied, now with a serious face. Poroshenko is on trial for treason in his homeland.
Borisov further developed his theory that somehow his arrest was connected to Ukraine: “We had a draft law to give weapons. And the parliament, because of these very people, did not vote on it. But our commitment remains.”
The two shook hands. “Boyko, I’m counting on you. For European solidarity, I rely on GERB. And Ukraine relies on Bulgaria. In such a situation, we will surely win”, Poroshenko solemnly told him. And Borisov, in turn, promised him his support at the EPP congress.
