People should be better informed about the goals and what is included in the document.” This was announced by the chairman of the GERB parliamentary group, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, at a briefing in the parliament.
“I don’t know if there is anyone who wants women not to be protected, and children to be informed about gender equality,” Tsvetanov pointed out and called for responsible speaking, essentially, on the subject. GERB will organize a series of debates with specialists dedicated to the convention.
“We propose a longer-term discussion of this issue,” said MP Desislava Atanasova. “Just yesterday, the BSP behaved hypocritically several times. A long time ago, the regional councils of the left initiated this debate. Socialist women ask the BSP leader and their parliamentary group to support the Istanbul Convention. And this support was promised,” said Atanasova.
According to her, the Sofia socialists and the Smolyan socialists met with Kornelia Ninova, who declared that their party would stand behind this document. According to Atanasova, the central leadership has promised to support the ratification of the Istanbul Convention in the National Assembly. “Is this hypocrisy or dementia,” Desislava Atanasova asked.
“With a wider debate that we will organize, we believe that the most correct decision will be reached. We will discuss the viewpoints of all faiths as well. Therefore, even today, this point is postponed from consideration by the Commission on Religions until a wider public discussion is held,” Tsvetanov said.
“Yesterday, I voted in the committee “against” the introduction of the concept of social gender in Bulgaria. We don’t need to be told what gender is, we all know what it is. We’re not morons. We may be the poorest, but we are not idiots,” said the deputy Georgi Markov. According to him, Bulgaria is at the forefront of the fight against domestic violence and violence in general.
“In some of the developed democracies there is such violence that the Convention could not prevent,” said the GERB deputy and thanked Prime Minister Boyko Borissov for making a wise decision not to interfere with the decision of the deputies regarding the convention, as the reactions in society and even in the church they are sharp and division should not be allowed.
