GERB expressed their readiness to support Karimanski as head of the BNB – 2024-04-04 06:57:46

/ world today news/ For more than an hour now, the deputies have been discussing the election of the governor of the BNB in the plenary hall. There is only one candidate for the high post – Lubomir Karimanski, who is nominated by “There is such a people”.

GERB expressed readiness to support Karimanski.

“We cannot leave the entire cash flow in the hands of Asen Vasilev. Only for this reason would I support Karimanski,” said MP Toma Bikov.

He explained that GERB would never support the withdrawn candidate Andrey Gyurov, just because he was proposed by “We continue the change”. “This is our political decision. Only a month ago, our leader Boyko Borisov was arrested by the minister of PP Boyko Rashkov, and we cannot support a decision of this political force. To fail the procedure is also absurd, it has already failed twice. Which guarantees, that you will make the third procedure successful?”, said Bykov.

We remind you that Andrey Gyurov, nominated by “We continue the change”, withdrew from the race after the battle between PP and ITN whose candidate should take over the management of the central bank caused serious tension in the quadruple coalition.

Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said he expected Karimanski to do the same and parliament to start a new procedure, but Slavi Trifonov’s party announced that he would not give up.

Three of the parties in the quadruple coalition – PP, BSP and DB – have already announced that they will not support Karimanski and have announced a new candidacy that will not be a politically charged figure, but an expert.

“Don’t approach the election of the governor of the BNB lightly”, addressed his partners from PP, BSP and DB, ITN MP Toshko Yordanov. “Don’t take it easy so you don’t say later that Mr. Karimanski was elected with the votes of the opposition,” Yordanov said. He recalled the merit of Karimanski as the head of the budget committee that the update of the budget last year was done on time, as well as the adoption of the budget for this year. He is an undisputed professional who has shown before your eyes what he can do,” said Yordanov.

“It is written in the coalition agreement that we will support a common candidacy for the governor of the BNB. There is no such candidacy and there is no way we can support Mr. Karimanski,” answered the red MP Georgi Svilenski. He asked GERB at what price they sold their votes for the INT candidate, which provoked sharp retorts from GERB and ITN.

“We pushed ourselves into this situation and the opposition is not to blame. Measure your words, hints of a deal are base and disgusting,” said Toshko Yordanov.

Until the end, it was not clear how the opposition parties would vote today. Analysts predict that Karimanski will not be able to get 50 + 1 votes and a new procedure for electing the governor of the BNB will be scheduled.

However, there are doubts that by playing with the quorum the ITN candidate can get the necessary support. According to the rules, the new governor of the BNB can be elected by 50% of those present in the hall plus one vote. With a minimum quorum of 120 votes, this means Karimanski can be elected with 61 votes.

From the parliamentary rostrum, “Vazrazhdane” announced that they would vote “against” Karimanski. “We would only support a candidate who is in favor of preserving the Bulgarian lev and against adopting the euro,” said the leader of “Vazrazhdane” Kostadin Kostadinov. His fellow party member Tsoncho Ganev also declared for the return of the country’s gold reserve, a large part of which was kept in a private English bank. “Karimanski did not take a position on this issue at the hearing. It is also unacceptable that 6 out of 7 parties in the parliament read a declaration that the euro will be introduced from January 1, 2024. We need to change the legislation so that such decisions are made with referendum,” Ganev said.
