GERB Delays Announcement of Mayoral Candidate for Sofia

GERB will announce its mayoral candidate for Sofia “when Mercury retrograde is over”. The party leader made the announcement Boyko Borisov and specified that this would happen within a few days.

Mercury retrograde ends today, September 15, but according to unofficial information from Mediapool, GERB will announce its candidate on September 17 – Sofia Day.

Ever since he said in 2016 how he would align the announcement of his presidential candidacy with retrograde Mercury, Borissov has also explained the postponement of important political decisions with the astrological position of this very planet. It is a separate question to what extent this is the real motive, and not an attempt to divert attention from the fact that GERB simply has no decision to announce. As is known, GERB is having difficulty finding a suitable candidate for mayor, especially in Sofia. Since its existence as a party, GERB has always won the capital.

This time, however, the possibility of losing is much more realistic compared to the previous local elections in 2019, when it came to a runoff, but GERB candidate Yordanka Fandakova still won, mainly because of the mobilization of votes in the Roma sections. Therefore, it is important for Borisov to calculate the situation and assess who to let into the competition, which is expected to be won by the IT entrepreneur Vasil Terziev, joint candidate of “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria”, “Save Sofia” and the “Team for Sofia” association “.

For now, the only thing that is certain is that Fandakova will not be a candidate.

Zhelyazkov: It’s not me

The Speaker of the Parliament Rosen Zhelyazkovpointed out as a possible candidate with serious claims, is also out of the question.

On Friday, shortly before retrograde Mercury expired, Zhelyazkov officially announced that he would not be ascended. “I don’t know where you came up with such news or if some of my fellow parliamentarians, who make up fairy tales from the podium, come up with such news. No, I am not the candidate for mayor of Sofia”. he reported from Georgia, where he is visiting.

In the past month, it was rumored in GERB that Zhelyazkov wanted to be sure that the party would perform well in the local elections in the capital in order to run for mayor.

Penultimate: It is possible that it is Georgi Georgiev

Representatives of GERB commented informally to Mediapool that at the moment it seems more likely that a mayor will be appointed the current chairman of the Metropolitan Municipal Council, Georgi Georgiev. For more than a year, he has been in an active campaign for his promotion and has not stopped giving signals that he wants to be elected mayor of Sofia.

However, the party leadership had reservations due to concerns that he would not appeal to the fringes of their electorate. Months ago, the leader of GERB even announced that Georgiev would not be the candidate for mayor. It is possible that Borisov has changed his mind about Georgiev, who will certainly be the leader of the lists for municipal councilors, say members of GERB.

The parties are almost done with their candidates

In Sofia, where GERB had no problems in the last few elections, a contested battle is expected. Businessman Vasil Terziev, supported by PP-DB, emerged as the most serious competitor.

The leadership of the BSP ultimately decided to approve as a candidate the until recently trade unionist Vanya Grigorova, who was proposed by the capital structure of the formation.

On Friday, BSP leader Cornelia Ninova said that the party will finish the nominations for mayoral candidates on Saturday. So far, 138 names have been approved, she said.

PP-DB will announce its candidates for mayors in the country very soon, said MP Ivaylo Mirchev. “There was no allocation and the aim was to see who were the best candidates for the respective positions. All cities are important right now in Bulgaria, because we have a battle for our countryhe stated.

The leader of “Vazrazhdane” Kostadin Kostadinov said that his party has been ready for a long time and will bet on working people because it was “it’s about time we had workaholics for mayor“.

On the other hand, ITN said that they let their local structures propose the candidates for mayors, because they know the individual settlements. The same principle was applied to Sofia.

“Our local municipal organizations have had plenty of time to make these decisions. We are currently doing a final review of everything we have received from the country, and by the middle of next week we will be ready to announce specifically where, how, in what manner we are appearing and who are our candidates by seat”, said Ivaylo Valchev.
