GERB and DPS competed for village mayors. Who prevailed?

GERB and DPS faced off today when elections were held for four village mayors in Silistrensko and Varna.

The result was a draw – both political forces received two new mayors each.

Ayati Yusein from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms won the partial local elections in the village of Bistra, Alfatar municipality. He received 91 out of a total of 126 votes, the Municipal Election Commission announced. The election day in the village passed peacefully, without any complaints or reports. Voter turnout was 44.5%.

There was almost as much activity in the village of Sekulovo, Dulovo municipality, where Nevzad Ibryam from GERB was elected in a fierce competition.

As the only candidate for mayor of the village of Popovich, municipality of Byala, Varna region, Ismail Mehmed from GERB won the partial local elections in the settlement. He received 110 votes out of 403 eligible voters. The turnout on election day was low – 28 percent.

With a much higher voter turnout – about 70 percent in the village of Poletsite, Dulgopol municipality, Nejli Selim from DPS fought for the post of mayor.

GERB and BSP tested their strength in the village of Lilyache, Vrachansko, but their candidates went to a runoff, and at the last moment the difference narrowed to 14 votes in favor of the socialists.

Galin Georgiev from “Democratic Bulgaria” prevailed in the first round against Tihomir Trifonov from GERB and became the new mayor of Zlatna Panega, Yablanitsa municipality.

GERB is awaiting the results of two other partial elections for mayor – in the municipalities of Rakitovo and Nova Zagora.

In contrast to the election of rural mayors, the turnout in cities was much lower. In Rakitovo, Pazardzhik, the vote ended with a voter turnout of 36.2 percent, announced the chairman of the Municipal Election Commission (MEC) Stoyanka Gincheva. She specified that only 4,602 voters from Rakitovo, Kostandovo and the village of Dorkovo went to the polls to exercise their right to vote. The newly elected mayor will rule until the regular local elections in the fall of 2023.

There was also a record low voter turnout in the partial elections for mayor in the Municipality of Nova Zagora. Only 21% cast their vote for the four candidates. An investigation found that in the sections with paper ballots in small towns, people are more active, bTV reported. Anti-records were also born – from six sections with 5,000 voters, only 40 people voted by noon. People explain that they are boycotting the elections and will not vote.
