Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino is the new trainer of Inter Miami, the American club announced through the official channels. The Argentinian trainer is awaiting the necessary documentation and will then officially start working at the club. Martino was coach of Barcelona in the 2013/14 season and coach of Argentina between 2014 and 2016, where he had Lionel Messi under his wing. The superstar is expected to make his debut for Miami in July.
“I am very happy to join a big club like Inter Miami and I know that together we can achieve a lot of great things,” Martino said through the official channels. “The club has the necessary infrastructure to be a big club in the region and I believe we can achieve that with everyone’s hard work and commitment.” Co-owner David Beckham is also pleased. “Tata is a very respected person in our sport and his track record speaks for itself. We believe he is a coach who matches our ambitions as a club and we are optimistic about what we can achieve together.”

Martino started his coaching career in Argentina, after which he was national coach of Paraguay between 2007 and 2011. Between 2012 and 2013, he joined Newell’s Old Boys, the club where Messi took his first steps as a footballer before joining Barcelona’s youth academy. In 2013, Martino was appointed coach of Barcelona. He won the Spanish Super Cup with the Catalans, but things went wrong on the last matchday in LaLiga. In a direct duel for the championship, Atlético Madrid held on at Camp Nou (1-1), so that Diego Simeone’s team took the title. Martino left shortly after the game. A few months later, he was appointed national coach of Argentina, where he would remain for two years. Adventures followed at Atlanta United and Mexico.
Martino faces a tough job in Miami. The team from Florida is fifteenth and therefore bottom of the Eastern Conference in the MLS. In addition, Miami lost its last seven league games. To reach the play-offs for the championship, the club must finish at least ninth. The arrival of Messi and Sergio Busquets may help the club with that. In any case, Messi is expected to make his debut for the Miami on July 21. Then the game for the Leagues Cup against the Mexican Cruz Azul is on the program. Five days before that, Messi and Busquets are presented on the field of Miami as the newest signings.
