Gerardo Blanco Returns to Direct Hometown Play ‘The Aunt’s Inheritance’ for Virgen de las Candelas Celebrations

The writer and theater director Gerardo Blanco returns to direct one of his plays in his hometown. The Juan Yagüe Cinema Theater will be the scene of the play ‘The Aunt’s Inheritance’, a series of skits in which, as the title suggests, the aunt’s inheritance will be disputed.

Gerardo has written more than 21 plays and many more books that he prefers to keep for himself or his family. In addition, he has been directing the “La Candelaria” Cultural Theater Association for more than half a century. At first, the play was written as an inheritance from one of the uncles, but due to lack of actors it could not be done and he had to make a change in the script with the adaptation for women.

The play will be performed three times, on the occasion of the Virgen de las Candelas festivities.. On February 1, being the day before, the first screening will take place at 10:00 p.m. Already on Friday, February 2, a big day in the Pinar del Río town, a first performance will take place at 6:30 p.m. and another at 10:30 p.m., thus giving a range of options so that no one is left without seeing it.

It is a tradition that different plays are performed at the Candelas festivities and there is an anecdote in the town, because more than a century ago, the mayor of the town imposed theater on young people and whoever refused to participate In this, he had a punishment during the holidays, so he gained fame and there was no other option than to perform on stage.

He speaks with the experience of his 91 years and affirms that “young people are no longer interested in theater.” The forms of theater have changed, now they look more for a short theater in which few people participate. “So many years behind the stage give a lot of experience and in the end you know the audience and what they want, in this case is to laugh, so I think they will like this comedy a lot,” words of Gerardo, who encourages all the residents of San Leonardo and surrounding areas to come to the theater and take advantage of the performances that take place, which are becoming fewer and fewer. In addition, they will be able to enjoy the different activities carried out during the town’s patron saint festivities.
