Gerard van der Lem Criticizes Jakov Medic and Ajax’s Decision to Sell Mohammed Kudus to West Ham United

Gerard van der Lem is not exactly impressed by Jakov Medic, the former assistant coach of Ajax tells NH Radio Sportcafé. Van der Lem also finds it incomprehensible that the team from Amsterdam is still selling Mohammed Kudus to West Ham United at the end of the summer transfer window.

“He scored a great goal in his first game,” says Van der Lem about Medic in the talk show. The former trainer did not see the Croatian mandekker make a good impression in the Eredivisie match with Excelsior (2-2) and midweek against Ludogorets (1-4 win). “Did you see how he (against Ludogorets, ed.) was passed in the sixteen-meter area? He fell over like that. It is that Rensch dived for it…”

“It really shocked me, I really mean that,” continues Van der Lem. “I thought he was a good and strong defender, who is also agile, but he is not agile at all.” Presenter Leo Driessen then mentions that Medic was in principle brought in as a back-up behind Josip Sutalo, who was not yet eligible to play against Ludogorets. “If you say after two games: ‘Fortunately there will be someone else for him later, then you shouldn’t have got him’”, comments commentator Frank Snoeks.

Van der Lem also finds it incomprehensible that Ajax is still selling Kudus to West Ham United in the last days of the summer transfer window. “He still has two years left on his contract and he is a very important player,” said Louis van Gaal’s former assistant coach at Barcelona. “If I were Ajax, I wouldn’t sell Kudus at all now… If he continues like this, as he is playing football now, he will bring you twice as much money next year.”
