Gerard Pique: Because of Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola left Barcelona

The defender accused the Portuguese manager of being behind Guardiola’s departure from the Catalans.

Gerard Pique claims that Jose Mourinho has kept Pep Guardiola away from Barcelona during his time The Special One lead their classic rivals, Real Madrid.

With Barca, Guardiola won two Champions League titles, three La Liga, two Copa del Rey and two Club World Cups during his four years in charge of the Spanish giants.

But in 2012, he finally left Spain and took charge of Bayern Munich the following year.

And according to Pique, one of the big reasons Guardiola left Camp Nou was his feud with Mourinho in Spain.

“We won everything at that time and I remember that the first time Mourinho came to the Camp Nou he lost 5-0 against us,” Pique said on Gary Neville’s Overlap podcast.

“But in every press conference he is always like that – you know his style – and I think Guardiola feels that Mourinho has gone too far on several occasions.

Mourinho finally won La Liga with Madrid in 2011/12, which was Guardiola’s last season in charge Blaugrana.

According to Pique, Guardiola is fed up with what he experienced with Mourinho during the two competing in the Spanish league.

“Sometimes, it’s more important what happens off the pitch than what happens on the pitch. But Guardiola eventually left.”
