The lawsuit against Nu Image / Millennium Films and Padre Nuestro Productions is over the first of these films, which premiered in 2013. The actor claims that the producer has reduced the American and world box office score by tens of millions of dollars. According to the thesis of the screen agent Mike Banning, quoted by Variety magazine, 8 million dollars were not reported, which instead went to people in leading positions, Monitor writes.
“The producers have earned tens of millions of dollars from Code: Olympus, but they refuse to pay Butler a penny of the profits and revenues promised to him in the agreement between the two parties. The actor demands his fair share,” reads part of the lawsuit.
According to the documents submitted to the court, the star should have received 10% of the net profit. The actor has also negotiated percentages from the box office – American and world, upon reaching certain revenues from ticket sales. His production company was also entitled to 5 percent of the net profit. To conclude that he had not received a proper box office report, Butler had hired an auditor who found that U.S. box office receipts had been reduced by $ 17.5 million. There was also a discrepancy in the receipts for the producers.
Butler filed his case just a day after Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney over lost profits from the Black Widow. However, Variety believes that the case of the Scotsman is more traditional and is mainly related to accounting.
