The commitment that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will in every possible way strengthen exports of Greek products in order to make Thessaloniki and Northern Greece a pillar in which foreign direct investments will develop rapidly, was undertaken by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, in the meetings he had with representatives production organizations and mayors of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki at the Governor’s Office, with the participation of the Minister of Interior (Macedonia and Thrace) Kostas Giulekas.
“We want a Macedonia that will be strong. Strong for Greece, strong for the world. Strong diplomacy, strong national defense, strong economy will be combined, they will invest in the prosperity of Northern Greece and the development of Thessaloniki”, said Mr. Gerapetritis.
Referring to the two consecutive meetings, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated:
“We organized a big drive today so that we can show a high symbolism and point out something that the country needs.
The high symbolism is that Thessaloniki and Northern Greece are an immediate and major priority of the government, but they are also the engine of Greece. Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, is located exactly at the junction of East-West, North-South for our country. It has a significant geopolitical footprint. Our desire is for Thessaloniki and Northern Greece to become a real trade, tourism, culture hub, which will unite the wider Balkan region, Central and Northern Europe, unite the Middle East, unite the entire Mediterranean.
Thessaloniki has all the conditions to become a city that will compose, unite and develop. It has a huge potential which we will make sure to release.
It is the belief of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that we will strengthen, in every way, our exports. We will make Greece, and especially Northern Greece, a pillar, so that foreign direct investments develop at a rapid pace. A significant growth rate is also recorded. In the last five years, 20% more businesses have been established in Northern Greece. There is a significant reduction in unemployment and a significant rate of growth. Our aim, however, is to have much greater regional convergence.
Northern Greece is at the forefront of the government.
Both geopolitically and for reasons related to the principles of our foreign policy, we want a strong Macedonia. Strong for Greece, strong for the world. The stronger Thessaloniki and Northern Greece are, the bigger our country’s footprint becomes in Europe and the world. And for this reason, strong diplomacy, strong national defense, strong economy, will be combined, they will invest in the prosperity of Northern Greece and the development of Thessaloniki”.
“It is the conviction of this government, it is the order of the prime minister himself that we fight as much as possible to strengthen, to steel Northern Greece.
Mr. Gerapetritis and I discussed various ways in which the forces of Northern Greece could be mobilized and many issues which, anyway, pass through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be brought up in the meetings here, to see how quickly we can we are led to their implementation”, emphasized Mr. Giulekas.
