Geraint Thomas Shocked by Crazy Maneuvers and Lack of Brakes in Vuelta a España 2023

Geraint Thomas off the charts? Well, the Ineos Grenadiers rider didn’t get off to a great start in this Vuelta and already finished over 1′ behind Evenepoel in the standings. After the stage in Tarragona, however, the Welshman concentrated on the riding qualities of the group. Or, rather, the attitude of some runners in a group. He mentioned an episode of Groves being grabbed by the neck by a Movistar runner, only because he had cut him off. “Groves may not have been kind, however… These are crazy” added Thomas who said he was shocked to see certain maneuvers, by some riders and some teams who “don’t know that there are brakes on bikes”.

Some racers do dumb things: do they know there are brakes?

The ending was awful, a horror movie. The rest of the stage was very easy, but the final kilometers were awful. After the last climb, it was all wide and beautiful roads to get to the finish line, but some riders did absolute idiotic things. And some teams probably forget they have brakes on their bikes. It’s not that one has to necessarily stay on the wheel of a partner for 100% of the race time. If you break away even just for a moment, you can wait 5 seconds before trying to pick up the wheel you are interested in. [Geraint Thomas al podcast Watts Occurring]

I’ve seen an episode between Groves and one from Movistar: they’re crazy

Kaden Groves closed a Movistar rider. Sure, it wasn’t a very nice move, but things like that can happen in the last 10km. However, that Movistar rider decided to fight back by grabbing Groves’ jersey near the neck and pushing him. I was right behind them when it happened. I saw it and I was like ‘That guy is crazy. He reckons he has too much caffeine in his blood.’ So I decided to position myself as a group in a different spot. This business could only end in a fall
