Gepard – why anti-aircraft installations are good and how they will help the Armed Forces

A wide range of ammunition makes this self-propelled anti-aircraft gun effective even against lightly armored vehicles.

German Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns are already on Ukrainian soil. Contrary to the forecasts of skeptics, Germany nevertheless began to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons.

As the plot of the FreeDom project says, perhaps the pace of deliveries is not what the Ukrainian side was counting on, but a start has been made. The journalists explained what kind of equipment it was and how it would help the Ukrainian army.

German Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns are one of the best in their class, they have the ability to hit targets at a distance of 100 meters to 4 kilometers. Capable of shooting down helicopters, planes and even missiles.

The installation was designed primarily to combat air targets. The crew of only three people – the driver, commander and gunner. High mobility and turret traverse speed make it possible to quickly respond to air threats.

“Gepard is used primarily to combat low-flying targets, we are talking about targets with a speed in the range of 350-400 meters per second. It can be both a certain kind of ammunition, and it can also be objects such as attack helicopters. Then There are actually installations of this kind, they are used as a means of air defense,” says military expert Alexander Kovalenko.

Each of the two guns is capable of firing 550 rounds per minute, which means that in 60 seconds a cheetah can hit a target more than 1000 times, and a wide range of ammunition makes this self-propelled anti-aircraft gun effective even against lightly armored vehicles. But the main feature of Gepard is even non-armament, it is equipped with a unique radar capable of detecting a target at a distance of up to 15 kilometers and reliably protecting its positions.

In addition to two radars, Gepard has a unique fire control system, on-board navigation, and even protection against radiation and chemical weapons. It is able to work in any weather and time, and some machines are even equipped with laser rangefinders.

Earlier, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov stated that delivery of 15 Gepard complexes is expectedthree of which have already entered Ukraine and are at the disposal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
