The process of Georgia’s accession to the European Union was stopped de facto because the actions of the government of this country go against European values. EU leaders announced this on October 17 after the summit in Brussels.
European leaders called on the Georgian authorities to carry out deep democratic reforms that meet the requirements of European integration, and the European Council expressed the hope that early parliamentary elections will be held in Georgia in a free and fair manner, with access to – local and foreign observers.
At the summit they also announced that they were willing to support the Georgians on their European journey, pitting them against the country’s government.
Earlier, Georgia signed a law banning LGBT* propaganda and gender reassignment, and also adopted a law on foreign agents.
* In Russia, the international LGBT movement is recognized as terrorist and is banned.
