Georgian 87-year-old singer Nani Bregvadze, People’s Artist of the USSR, wished Happy New Year to the participants of the party, where LGBT* performers performed, remotely. In a video message to them, she expressed confidence that “love will still win.”
As noted by local media, Bregvadze was supposed to open the show, but was unable to come due to health problems. The organizers announced on December 25 that Bregvadze would not be able to open the show. They said that the singer was criticized for her support of LGBT* performers, especially from far-right groups.
In the Georgian capital, with the support of the LGBT* organization Tbilisi Pride, a series of “queer events” are held, where “drag queens” compete, usually men in women’s outfits and bright makeup. Last year, New Year’s shows were opened by the first female jazz performer in Georgia Giuli Chokheli and Georgian pop star Lela Curcumia.
