The polls have closed in Georgia, with all sides expected to emerge victorious in parliamentary elections that will determine whether the former Soviet republic turns to the West or to Russia amid the war in Ukraine.
Exit polls released immediately after the voting ended give completely different predictions of the result: in one of them the ruling <a href="https://www.world-today-news.com/both-the-ruling-party-and-the-opposition-are-announcing-the-victory-in-the-georgian-parliamentary-elections/" title="Both the ruling party and the opposition are announcing the victory in the Georgian parliamentary elections“>Georgian Dream party is said to be winning comfortably, while two others predict that the opposition will have a majority in the new parliament.
The Imedi TV channel, which supports the Georgian Dream, predicted a victory for the conservative party with a percentage of 56%. The pro-opposition channels Formula and Mtavari Arkhi say the pro-Western parties will, all together, manage to control the 150-member parliament.
The six-poll conducted by the US Edison Research institute on behalf of a pro-opposition television station shows that the four opposition parties that have joined together have 51.9% to 40.9% for Georgian Dream.
The pro-Western president of Georgia, Salome Zourabisvili, in a first reaction, wrote on Platform X that “European Georgia wins with 52%”.
