Georgia decides for everyone. I’m at stake two seats in the Senate, the balance in Congress and the political potential of the Biden Administration. Not surprisingly i four competitors they spent pharaonic figures: over 450 million dollars just for TV commercials. The senators in office are Republicans David Perdue, 71, and Kelly Loeffler, 50. They must reject the challenge of Jon Ossoff, 33, and Raphael Warnock, 51, respectively.

The results will set the balance in the Upper House of Congress. It is enough for the Conservatives to win even one race to reach the threshold of 51 MPs, that is, the majority. Progressives, on the other hand, must conquer the entire stakes to reach 50: in that case the parity would be broken in favor by Kamala Harris, Biden’s number two and also president of the Senate. The voters called to the polls are caround 7 million, three million have already voted in recent weeks by sending the ballots by post or by presenting themselves in person. During the night, the first figures on turnout arrive: very high even if it is not yet clear whether in the end it will exceed the 5 million reached on 3 November. The flow seems to have increased especially in Atlanta and neighboring counties, that is, in the Democratic fort. But the utmost caution is required: most likely the two races will be decided in the sprint. The first percentages must therefore be considered largely provisional. At 5.30 in the morning, when 95% of the ballots have been scrutinized, the results are still in the balance. Republican Perdue leads with 50.2% over Ossoff (49.8%). But in the other lane the progressive Warnock in the lead with 50.2% against 49.8% of the conservative Loeffler.

Perdue, senator since 2015, former CEO of Reebok, a Trumpian of origins. He comes from a family rooted in the area. Cousin Sonnie Perdue served as governor of Georgia for eight years before becoming the Minister of Agriculture in The Donald’s cabinet. Politically, Loeffler’s story is fresher. The daughter of farmers from Illinois, Kelly studied marketing. In 2002 she was hired as a manager in the financial Intercontinental Exchange. In 2004 he married the founder, Jeffrey Sprecher. The two, the Washington Post estimates, have assets of approximately $ 520 million. Loeffler only converted to Trumpism after the 2016 election. She was appointed to the Senate in December 2018 by Governor Brian Kemp, now on Trump’s list of traitors. On the other side we find the African American Warnock, reverend of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the church of Martin Luther King. Together with Stacey Abrams, he founded the New Georgia Project, an organization committed to mobilizing the black electorate which here amounts to a third of the total. THEFinally Ossoff: if elected he would become the youngest member of parliament in the Senate. a former documentary producer. He approached politics as a kid, campaigning for John Lewis, the great civil rights activist who passed away last summer.
