Georgia decides whether the president will have a majority in the Senate. Maybe it will be determined by voters in January – ČT24 – Czech Television

Party dominance in Congress is always important to the American president, because a negative legislature can largely block his practical policy. If the trends from Friday morning are confirmed and Democrat Joe Biden becomes the new head of the White House, he can count on a democratic supremacy in the House of Representatives, but the situation in the Senate is unclear.

Until now, the Senate is composed of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independent politicians voting with Democrats. The ambition of the party with the donkey in the emblem was to restore its dominance in the Senate – either in order to support its president or to make Donald Trump’s position more difficult.

But analysts agree that Republicans outperformed the Senate election and now even face a temporary stalemate in the chamber, backed by southern Georgia. This proves to be extremely influential when electing the president. After counting the results from the election night, she favored the defender Trump for a long time (Republicans also traditionally dominate the southern states), but on Friday Biden gained the upper hand with the gradual counting of correspondence votes – according to Business Insider, voters in dynamically developing Atlanta.

Georgia’s departure from the unequivocal support of Republicans is also reflected in the Senate vote. In it, each of the states of the Union is represented by two votes, but the local rules in Georgia work with the equivalent of the Czech two-wheel system. If none of the candidates get over fifty percent of the vote, they will be re-elected in early January – and at the moment, the numbers appear to be in Georgia’s seat.

Presidential elections in a nutshell

In the first battle, Republican Senator David Perdue and his Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff are facing each other. In a simultaneous by-vote, Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler.

On Friday morning, the Senate election looked for a “felt”, 48 seats for Democrats, the same number for Republicans. Republicans are likely to win in Alaska and North Carolina. If Democrats could win both Georgia and the presidency, they would have a majority. The American media reminds that if Biden becomes president, his vice-president Kamala Harris, according to the constitution, will have a decisive vote in the event of a 50:50 vote.

“Can it happen? Of course he can. Is this the most likely outcome? “Given the unexpected strength of Republican candidates,” CNN said, but warned that Georgia could expect mammoth investment in the campaign in the coming months and that the January vote here “will be covered by the media as a small presidential election.”

Without a Democratic majority in the Senate, Biden will hardly be able to push through his plans in health care or environmental protection.
