“Georgi Gospodinov and Angela Rodel Win International Booker Prize for Novel ‘Time Shelter'”

Bulgarian author Georgi Gospodinov, together with translator Angela Rodel, has won the prestigious International Booker Prize for his novel Time Shelter (Shelter from other times).

The British Prize is for authors from around the world whose book has been translated into English. The prize includes a cash prize of 50,000 pounds (almost 58,000 euros), which will be divided between writer and translator.

The book is about a hospital where people with Alzheimer’s disease can relive their past down to the smallest detail. The aim is to reactivate the memory of the patients. But more and more healthy people are coming forward who hope to find a way out of the hectic modern life through treatment.

Gospodinov is an internationally acclaimed Bulgarian author. His works have been translated into 25 languages. “This award is an encouragement to writers from the Balkans, who often fall outside the mainstream of English-speaking audiences,” he said.

Translator Rodel is originally American, but has lived and worked in Bulgaria for a long time. In 2014 she was granted Bulgarian citizenship for her work and contribution to Bulgarian culture.
