Georges Siksna: Reminiscing on Collaborations with Aleksandar Kublinski and Uldi Stabulnieka

The well-known singer and owner of a beautiful voice, Georges Siksna, is still actively performing concerts, but when looking at his photo album and looking for his favorite photo, he admits that the kind of joint music with composers he experienced in the seventies and eighties, collaborating with Aleksandar Kublinski and Uldi Stabulnieka, is now no longer not being

Performed at childhood holidays and in rich kolkhozes

“This photo, in which I am seen together with the two great composers, could have been taken around the beginning of the eighties, but in which of the many cultural houses where we performed at that time, I will not say anymore,” the singer says. “Both of them have passed away, but I still remember both Uldi and Aleksandra as wonderful colleagues and excellent composers. And I also remember that Uldis usually sang his own songs at concerts; I was sung, it seems, one of his songs, the name of which I don’t really remember anymore.” The singer says that at that time many wonderful actors went with him to the concerts: «Of course, we still have concerts now, but I miss that charming company of actors! There were Olģerts Dunkers, Edmunds Freibergs and many others. Now everything is much different – there are no such companies, nor such bohemia». While telling this, the singer wanders into reminiscences, how once together with both composers and in other companies of artists, they toured cultural centers and gave concerts at the once so popular childhood holidays. “Alexander had written the song “Toy ship” for his son, which I used to sing at those events.” The artist also remembers that at one time they went to perform at rich collective farms: “On the side of Bauska was the collective farm “Victory”, which invited to its events. They had several production plants, and so four groups of us went there from Riga. We got on the bus, and each group was taken to its own event, but then everyone was collected and taken home,” he laughs and adds – probably there are few companies in Latvia that can afford to invite four concert groups, although large-scale events still happen.

“It was a very musical house!”

Georges Siksna also recalls that at one time the two composers he mentioned lived in the famous artists’ house in Ågenskaln, near the Zasulauka station. “They were good friends, and when I visited Aleksandar, Uldis used to stop by as well. Each of them had their own character: Alexander was faster, Uldis – very calm. Both were excellent pianists, so I think that house was lucky to have such musical and cheerful people living there at that time. In general, there was already a musician living in each stairwell at one time, so the house was noisy in a good way. Likewise, Uldis and Aleksandrs often visited each other and showed their new compositions. As a young boy, it was very pleasant for me to hear that, and there was also a lot to learn from both greats…”

Currently, the singer’s repertoire does not contain any compositions from both composers. “But if I think about it, I did sing Aleksandar Kublinski’s song “Summer evening” with text by Imantas Auziņas at my anniversary concert,” the singer happily adds.
