Near the Brooklyn Museum, a 27-year-old woman threw the molotov cocktail at the rear window of the van, which shattered in shock, a spokeswoman said, but the four police officers had time to get out. of the vehicle without damage.
They then arrested, especially for “attempted murder of a police officer”, this woman from upstate New York, as well as her sister, who tried to intervene.
“It’s a miracle that no police officer died” during the protests that took place in New York on Friday, New York Police Chief Dermot Shea said at a press conference on Saturday.
Several demonstrations were organized Thursday and Friday in New York, as in many American cities, to protest against police violence targeting blacks after the death of George Floyd during a strong arrest in Minneapolis on Monday.
After the holding of a first more modest demonstration in lower Manhattan, several thousand people gathered late Friday afternoon in front of the Barclays Center, Brooklyn’s performance hall.
For several hours, small groups of demonstrators then opposed the police, who carried out more than 200 arrests, said Dermot Shea.
“It was a demonstration well prepared to cause destruction and chaos,” he said, referring in particular to appeals launched via social networks.
Other demonstrations were planned during the weekend, especially in Harlem early Saturday afternoon.
