After premiering “Strange Way of Life” by Pedro Almodóvar, George Steane presents “La Mesias” by Los Javis, positioning himself as one of the leading young actors for a new generation of Spanish cinema.
Spanish cinema is a hotbed of new faces. One of them stands out for its uniqueness. It’s George Steane. And he probably sounds familiar to you. The first time he appeared on Neo2 was as a model, a profession that he has combined with acting training and various independent film projects. Little by little, but taking firm steps as an actor, his acting talent is coming to light. He fell in love with Pedro Almodóvar who did not hesitate to include him in the cast of “Strange Form of Life”. And now he conquers Los Javis for “The Messiah”.

Actor and model, this is the story of one of the promises of Spanish cinema come true
You are from 2001, where exactly were you born? Where does Steane come from?
I was born in Valladolid. My maternal family is from there, from a town called Valoria La Buena. My parents were getting married there on May 4, 2001, at the city hall and that night I went out. Ruined honeymoon. As for the surname Steane, my paternal family is from Swansea, Wales. Hence the British surname.

The first time you appeared in Neo2 was in 2020 in a fashion editorial with Jesús Ubera and Javier de Juanas, what have you been doing since then?
Finishing my studies as an actor; three independent feature films by the wonderful Luis Soto, Manuel Guillen and Lucas Vallina; two chapter appearances in Movistar Plus series, “El Apagón” and “La Mesías”; and of course, working with the maestro Pedro Almodóvar in his latest short western, “Extraña Forma de Vida”.

How did you get started in the fashion world?
The university where I trained as an actor is private and the prices are not cheap, which made me want to contribute financially to my parents in any way possible. One day I found out that there was a well-known modeling agency near my house, Uno Models, and I decided to show up at the agency’s door. KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK, I want to work with you, you liked my profile and I’ve been there ever since.

Your file highlights skills such as: singing, dancing, guitar, tennis, skiing, golf, soccer… Do you speak Spanish, English, French… is there anything you’re bad at?
No, nothing at all.
Now your role as an actor is coming to light, and although you have been appearing in several projects, one of them is in a big way with Pedro Almodóvar for “Extraña Forma de Vida”. How was the casting?
Yes, on a large scale I am beginning to get my head around this world. The casting was different from what it normally is, phases and so on. I did a casting with the wonderful casting directors Eva and Yolanda, and of course I had no idea what it was for, and one day my agent called me telling me that I had to go that same afternoon to El Deseo (the production company of the Almodóvar). I went and Pedro and I talked about the project for a while. He told me that he wanted me to play the role that Manu Ríos ended up playing, the blind fado singer. A few days later my agent called me again telling me that Pedro had decided to change the character I finally played, Joe, Silva’s son.

What was the rush like when you found out you were getting the role?
Well, the truth is that I didn’t believe it nor did I want to get my hopes up too much because you know, many things can happen. But simply the fact of having been talking to one of the greatest masters of cinema in his own office was already more than gratifying.

What is it like to be directed by Pedro Almodóvar?
Wonderful, seeing how someone with that level of mastery and mastery of their craft works nourishes you and makes you grow as a worker. The learning is enormous.
Has your life changed at all as the new Chico Almodóvar?
No, not really. It is true that the social status that having worked with Pedro gives you is impossible to ignore. Simply having the certainty that my work is on the right path and that if I continue doing things well and continue working and training, things will work out.

I haven’t had a chance to see the short. What is your role about?
My character is called Joe, he is a problematic young man, unconscious and hooked on vices and a bad life. One day Joe kills a girl he is dating, who happens to be the daughter of the County Sheriff, Jake (Ethan Hawke). Therefore, his father, Silva (Pedro Pascal), decides to go to town to convince his old friend not to persecute his son despite his atrocious acts.

The cast is superb, which of the actors impacted you the most?
The truth is that Ethan Hawke, you know, when you are learning and training as an actor there is a kind of mysticism that surrounds our craft. What will the great actors do to differentiate themselves from the rest? Do they have something supernatural that makes them stand out so much? What will it be? And being surrounded by so many artistic geniuses made me realize that there is nothing mystical, nothing supernatural. The key is work, perseverance and dedication, as in any other job.

And how was being in Cannes?
It was incredible. Walking the same red carpet that all those film and acting legends have done before me was a dream come true. James Stewart has walked around! Paul Newman has walked there! Lawrence Olivier has walked there! If I continue I won’t stop. A dream.
How did you handle being the center of attention?
Well, I handled it well, I’m an actor, I like attention.
