Santos is only the sixth person to be expelled from Congress in the entire history of the United States.

Santos was also indicted earlier this year on 23 counts of corruption. He himself denies criminal guilt. In this case, he is accused of embezzling public funds and of lying about his assets, income and debts.

After Santos was elected last November, it was revealed that he had fabricated large parts of his CV and family history.

He lied that his mother had died during the terrorist attack on 11 September. He lied about being a volleyball star when he was in college. The Catholic Santos also claimed he was Jewish. When the lie was uncovered he claimed that he had not said he was “Jewish” but “Jew-ish” because he has Jewish ancestry on his mother’s side.
Santos also claimed that his grandparents fled the Nazis during World War II. That wasn’t true either.
