The short story “Sandkings” by the American writer George RR Martin will soon be made as a Netflix film by the “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski in collaboration with the author Dennis Kelly. George RR Martin is best known as the author of the novel for the hit series “Game Of Thrones”. He published “Sandkings” back in 1974.
In an interview with the online magazine “Collider“Said Gore Verbinski about the planned” Sandkings “project:” It’s a brilliant little twisted short story that I love. And I’m working with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the British original series ‘Utopia’, it’s brilliant. ”Kelly will now rewrite Martin’s short story as an adaptation for Netflix. “I’m very happy about it,” said Verbinski.
This is what “The Sandkings” is about
The story is about a rich playboy named Simon Kress, who has a penchant for exotic and above all dangerous animals. In a mysterious shop called “Wo & Shade” he finally discovers a terrarium in which four colonies of so-called “sand kings” live. Kress buys the terrarium with the strange creatures and then leaves them starving to create conflicts between the colonies. Kress is increasingly inviting friends to show them the fights of the Sand Kings. When at some point a friend smashes the terrarium, the creatures expand their colonies far beyond the terrarium.
The planned Netflix adaptation of “Sandkings” is now the second adaptation of the Short story. As early as 1995 “Sandkings” appeared as a television film in which the actor Beau Bridges slipped into the role of Simon Kress. Which actor embodies the character this time is currently not known. In 1987 the company “DC Comic” also published the story as a graphic novel.
