George RR Martin rails against HBO

In a now-deleted blog post, author George RR Martin is critical of the recent deviations in “House of the Dragon.” Even showrunner Ryan Condal gets a swipe.

“House of the Dragon” Season 2 failed to fully convince viewers. Those who have read the book about the series in particular are unhappy about the changes in the TV series. Above all, there are deviations in the famous blood and cheese scene in Episode 1 of the new season, which has lost some of its tragedy and long-lasting influence. This obviously annoys not only the fans, but also author George RR Martin, who wrote the story that serves as the basis for the HBO series.

Blood and cheese is GRRM’s fault

A few hours ago, Martin railed against the deviations on his blog and also spoiled important events for the future of “House of the Dragon”. The anger is mainly related to the fact that Maelor – the son of Helaena and Aegon – was not cast correctly. In the books, in the scene with blood and cheese, Helaena has to choose between two sons: Maelor and Jaehaerys. She chooses Jaehaerys and thus seals the fate of her youngest – only for the assassins to end up killing the child she actually wanted to save. Maelor ultimately grows up knowing that his mother wanted to sacrifice him, which has a significant impact on the relationship between the two and also leaves its mark on Helaena.

This is how the scene in “House of the Dragon” went

In the TV series, Maelor is not present when the assassins break into the queen’s chambers. Instead, the sleeping twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera lie before her, who are almost indistinguishable at first glance. Helaena does not fight for the lives of her children for long, but readily reveals which of the two is Jaehaerys in order to save Jaehaera. The fact that Maelor’s fate has been significantly changed does not seem to please George RR Martin at all. He is thinking primarily of the future and the final seasons of “HotD”.

Martin speaks of “toxic butterflies”

Various Page quoted a passage from the blog post – but have largely deleted it – in which George RR Martin allegedly lashed out at showrunner Ryan Condal and accused him of not planning that far into the future, if he even had a plan for the further seasons of „House of the Dragon“ Martin calls such deviations “toxic butterflies,” alluding to the famous butterfly effect: a small change in season 2 can cause major deviations and problems in seasons 3 and 4.

Not all fans feel sorry

On social media, there is not only support from frustrated “House of the Dragon” fans, but also fans who have taken a critical stance towards Martin’s now deleted post. They made it clear that he should have learned from the debacle of the final season of “Game of Thrones” and not trusted HBO again, but in the end he probably preferred to collect money for a new film adaptation. Of course, some fans couldn’t resist commenting that George RR Martin should rather spend the time for long blog articles on finalizing “Winds of Winter”, which fans have been waiting for for 13 years.
