Jakarta –
A man in Washington, United States, named George Piano, told of his experience of almost dying due to a doctor’s negligence. It is suspected that the doctor removed the wrong organ when carrying out surgery on George.
“It’s been a terrible year,” George Piano, 72, told USA Today while detailing the alleged accident, which he said occurred on December 6, 2022 at Washington University Medical Center Northwest.
It all started when Piano visited the emergency room (ER) at the hospital because of stomach ache. Medical staff diagnosed him with appendicitis, requiring surgery to remove it.
During the operation, Piano admitted that everything did not go according to plan. He claims doctors couldn’t find his appendix and instead removed part of his lower colon.
“When I woke up after the anesthesia, I felt severe pain. Much worse than when I went to the hospital,” he recalled, quoted by the NY Post.
As a result of this incident, Piano felt so much pain that he decided to go to another hospital to undergo a CT scan. As a result, the inflamed appendix was still in his body.
“I had a colon leak that caused sepsis and infection. And I almost died from it,” he said.
Piano ultimately underwent four other operations to repair his colon and treat the infection. He was forced to spend 53 days in hospital undergoing more in-depth treatment. In fact, he also needed an ileostomy, an operation to create a stoma in the abdominal wall which is connected to the end of the small intestine (ileum).
“Someone needs to stop this and take responsibility and say this happened, we need to take steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Piano said.
Piano claims the surgeon who performed the alleged failed appendectomy underestimated Piano’s situation. He also sued the hospital and two doctors who contributed to the incident he experienced.
