George Papandreou says “No” to the bill for private universities – 2024-03-03 00:39:00

The former prime minister and member of parliament will not vote for the non-state universities bill PaSoKGeorge Papandreou, as interpreted from her platform Parliament during his speech to the educational affairs committee.

George Papandreou proposed, among other things, a broader reform in Educationwhile he was in favor of it of article 16 of the Constitution, so that the state can control the higher education sector.

“My proposal is to start a substantial debate on Article 16, free the public universities to be much more free and in a short time we will have many young people in Greece and foreigners,” noted George Papandreou. “This is the main reason why I believe that article 16 should be changed. The ND voted for it in 1975, and Andreas Papandreou had said why not they can create social institutions as well? The ND thought that through state education it would politically control a large student movement”, he then noted.

“The government is gradually coming to implement private initiatives. The first reasons are sensationalism, pressure from the lobbies”, said Mr. Papandreou and explained: “inequalities and injustices will be created and for these reasons alone it is enough to vote against the bill”, added Giorgos Papandreou.
