The family of George Floyd are suing the municipality of Minneapolis and four police officers for their responsibility in the death of this African-American during his arrest in late May in the northern city of the United States, his lawyers announced.

“It was not only Constable Derek Chauvin’s knee on George Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, it was the knee of the entire Minneapolis Police Department (…) that killed him” Ben Crump, the family’s main lawyer, said in city court.

George Floyd, 46, died on May 25 after being handcuffed and immobilized on the ground on his stomach, suffocating under the knee of a white police officer, Derek Chauvin.

His death sparked an unprecedented anger in the United States since the 1960s against racism and police violence, which spread around the world, with shouting protests of “Black Lives Matter” count).

Tried for murder

Derek Chauvin, dismissed from the police with three other officers present during the events, will be tried for murder and his ex-colleagues for complicity.

Minneapolis City Hall has decided to transform its police to create a “new model” of public safety.

Ben Crump did not disclose the amount requested from the municipality, simply explaining that he wanted to ensure that the family is safe from need “for eternity”.

“If you think the lives of black people matter, then understand that we are going to make sure there is a black value,” said Chris Stewart, lawyer for the complaint, at the town hall.

Police brutality

The death of George Floyd, when he posed no danger to officers, is a “pivotal moment” to address the issue of police brutality against the black minority in the United States, said Ben Crump.

He cited a 2018 American Journal of Public Health study that found that a black man is about three times more likely to be killed by police than a white man, while the black community accounts for 13 % Population.
