Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Police officer accused of murdering black man George Floyd released from a Minnesota prison on bail of US $ 1 million or approximately Rp14, 7 billion. Derek Chauvin previously charged with second and third floor murder and murder charges.
According to the circulating footage, Chauvin pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck until he went limp in the incident last May’s arrest.
Hennepin’s County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday (7/10) posted news of his parole after Chauvin served more than four months in prison, provided he remains in Minneapolis until trial.
Neither Chauvin nor his lawyers provided comment. But Ben Crump, the Floyd family lawyer criticized his release.
“Derek Chauvin booked a US $ 1 million bail today, (he) bought his freedom after robbing George Floyd alive,” he said in a teaser on Twitter.
“His release on bail is a painful reminder to the George family that we are still far from achieving justice,” he continued as quoted from AFP.
A number of groups have called for new protests online over the release of Chauvin, 44, but it is unclear whether the resulting numbers will have a major impact on the court’s decision.
Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer was fired and will be tried in March 2021 along with three other former police officers involved in Floyd’s death. The incident sparked the largest anti-racism movement in the United States since the 1960s.
The three other perpetrators, Thomas Lane, Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao were charged with aiding and conspiring to commit murder and second degree murder. The three of them had already been released on bail.
Floyd’s death on May 25 became a symbol of systemic racism and police harassment of African Americans. His death sparked a wave of protests that continued under the slogan “Black Lives Matter”.
The prosecutor said that the death began when Floyd allegedly transacted using counterfeit money of US $ 20 or Rp.294 thousand. It said the incident was “heinous, brutal and inhuman”.
The four defendants said the decision to detain Floyd was quite justified. They also point to coronary evidence of drugs found in Floyd’s body that were likely to be the leading cause of death.
All of the officers involved were fired one day after Floyd’s death, reflecting the seriousness that US cities are accepting allegations of police abuse.
