George Floyd: it’s 9 p.m., New York is barricaded

“It’s hard to believe, isn’t it?” At nightfall, the passer-by walks up Madison Avenue, one of Manhattan’s most chic streets, in the Upper East Side neighborhood. Nespresso, Apple, Ba & sh, all the major international brands hastily mounted plywood sheets to protect their windows.

In front of the two shops of Ralph Lauren facing each other at 72nd Street, a Long Island roofer and his Hispanic workers are still busy putting up protection. “Watch out, they’re coming! It’s 9 p.m. in New York, curfew is two hours away Monday night, and NYPD helicopters are already buzzing in the sky. It is in fact already too late for some stores in Midtown, further down in Manhattan: Nike, Michael Kors or Lego have already been vandalized and looted.
