George Alagiah, Long-Serving BBC Journalist, Dies at 67

George Alagiah, one of the BBC’s longest-serving journalists, died on Monday at the age of 67, reports the British broadcaster. The Sri Lankan-born newscaster was diagnosed with colon cancer nine years ago.

A BBC statement said Alagiah passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones. George fought to the bitter end, but sadly that battle ended today. “George was loved by all who knew him. He was simply a wonderful person.”

BBC CEO Tim Davie says everyone is “incredibly sad”. “He was more than just an excellent journalist. He conveyed his kindness, empathy and humanity to the public,” said Davie.

Alagiah worked at the BBC for over thirty years. For the past twenty years he has been the face of BBC News at Six. Before presenting the British news, the journalist was a foreign correspondent in countries such as Somalia, Rwanda and Iraq.

In 1994, Alagiah was named Journalist of the Year by Amnesty International for his coverage of the civil war in Burundi, East Africa.
