Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The former private secretary of Pope Benedict XVI, Georg Gänswein, led a service in Freiburg Cathedral. The archdiocese confirmed this on Monday on request. Since the death of Benedict XVI. On New Year’s Eve 2022, the 66-year-old is waiting for Pope Francis to assign him a new task. According to an unconfirmed report by the Argentine newspaper “La Nacion” from the end of April, Francis is said to have suggested that Benedict’s former confidant return to his home diocese of Freiburg.

As a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Freiburg reported on request, there were no talks with the diocese leadership on the agenda. Archbishop Stephan Burger is traveling in Colombia – according to the media, visits to church development organizations and aid initiatives were on the agenda there.

With the publication of a book entitled “Nothing but the Truth” about his time with Benedict, Gänswein recently caused a stir at the curia. In it, the native of the Black Forest reports on his disappointment at having been given permanent leave by Francis as prefect of the papal house in 2020. He also published the content of some of the Pope’s private letters.
