Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warns of geomagnetic storms of class G1 and G2 (very weak and moderate), which may occur on December 16 and 17, 2023. There is also a chance of the appearance of the aurora borealis in mid- and high latitudes.
As reported by National Geographic, magnetic storms are the result of passing through the Earth’s magnetic field “coronal plasma mass ejection” (CME) Some of the gas breaks away from the Sun’s atmosphere and is thrown into space, which may reach the Earth. Geomagnetic storms form when a CME breaks through.
Geomagnetic storms should not cause any damage, but we must take into account some difficulties. Radio signals can fade for at least an hour at high latitudes, and some satellites will require position correction.
Voltage alarms are also possible for voltage lines, distribution systems and generating stations. The change may also be felt by migrating animals that use the magnetic field.
