Geologists make first comprehensive map of the moon NOW

Scientists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have created the first-ever comprehensive map of the moon. The map shows all the named plains and craters of the Moon, as well as what they consist of and when and how they were formed.

The “United Geological Map of the Moon” is composed of data from decades of lunar research. These investigations were carried out by, for example, the Apollo astronauts, who were the only people who actually set foot on the celestial body in the 1960s and 1970s.

Data they collected was then supplemented with data collected by satellites, such as NASA’s Lunar Reconaissance Orbiter. In addition, previous maps of specific regions of the celestial body have been made. All this has been merged into one large map.

USGS made the map not only for enthusiasts and interested parties. For example, the map can also be used by NASA to choose locations for future moon landings, both for robots and humans.
