Surabaya, CNNIndonesia —
Geologist at the Surabaya Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Amien Widodo, suspected the vote bang the mysterious incident that occurred in a residential area in Sumenep, Madura, East Java, on Saturday (12/8), is not a geological event.
“Probably not a geological event,” said Amien when contacted CNNIndonesia.comSunday (13/8).

He suspected that the mysterious boom was caused by the sound produced by a project not far from the location. It can be in the form of mining or excavation work.
“It could be that there is mining, there is digging of wells or deepening of wells, or there is deepening of wells with a jojoh drill,” he said.
However, to determine what caused it, the ITS Team will also go to the location. They will analyze what the source of the mysterious sound is.
Furthermore, Amien said, explosions from the ground had also occurred in Ponorogo and Trenggalek around 2011.
“It used to happen in Ponorogo-Trenggalek but it was louder. Allegedly a shift in the fault,” he concluded.
Amien’s statement differs from Lecturer in the Faculty of Geology at Padjadjaran University, Dicky Muslim, who said the explosion in Sumenep could be related to a number of geological processes.
This was said because Sumenep, which is on Madura Island, is close to the RMKS fault zone or the Rembang-Madura-Kangean-Sakala fault.
“For example, shifting of rock layers, groundwater flow, to tectonic pressure. This depends on the geological conditions,” said Dicky when contacted CNNIndonesia.com by telephone, Sunday (13/8).
Previously, a number of residents in Dusun Tengah, Moncek Tengah Village, Lenteng District, Sumenep Regency, were shocked by a natural phenomenon in the form of vibrations and a mysterious thumping sound that could be heard from underground.
The sound sounded like the sound of someone digging a well. Although it is not yet clear what happened, the sound of booming vibrations can be felt by residents.
According to the police release, there are at least five points in the house that really hear and feel the vibrations and mysterious sounds. The five house owners are currently taking refuge in neighboring houses.
