Geoff Keighley shares his thoughts on DualSense

As part of the Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley has exclusive hands on the new wireless controller for the PS5.

Canadian host, presenter, journalist and producer Geoff Keighley gives his opinion on the DualSense from PS5 : “The big things I noticed are the adaptive triggers, L2 and R2. Outside the game environment, you can use it like on other controllers, but when you are in a game, there is the possibility of creating points of tension inside these triggers to feel many effects (…) I think it’s a unique sensation that will have a fairly significant impact, in the long term, on the gameplay. The other thing inside this controller is the haptic feedback. This adds another layer to the experience. The sensations are surprising. The speaker of the DualSense seems to have a much greater range than that of the DualShock 4, it is often directly related to what is happening with the haptics. I’m sure each game will use it differently or maybe not as much as some experiences. When you combine the speaker with the Tempest Engine (3D audio), there is a kind of harmony between the sound of the controller and what is going on in the console. It’s really unique and interesting. Some people have asked me what the weight of the controller is. Compared to the PS4 controller, the DualSense weighs a little more, but that doesn’t seem heavier. It seems better structured, everything is well done, it’s rich, there is a good grip.

To test the functionality of DualSense, Geoff Keighley had access to a long demo of the platformer Astro’s Playroom from Japan Studio: “The reason we play it is because it will be delivered directly with the console and it really enhances the controller (…) You can hear the sound of my robot who is walking. There are six degrees of movement… In a sandstorm, I am static, but you hear the clear sounds of the sand approaching you, there is a tension at the level of the triggers and the lever because of the ‘environment (…) On this costume, I will push the touchpad of the DualSense to close the zipper (…) I have never felt anything like that before on the joystick of a console. When you pull the triggers, there is really tension. And it’s programmable. One thing that I find really funny in this demo is that it makes you think of how these technologies will be used in other games (…) You see this ice cream on the screen, but you hear a storm literally inside the DualSense, and you feel a kind of rumbling through haptic feedback. When you pass in front of each small piece of ice, you hear a small tinkling (…) On this control point, you must blow in the joystick to activate it. When you have to pull something, the triggers resist as when you tie the string with a bow. This is a fun experience.

DualSense and PS5: Sony’s promotional video

PS5’s Sony is still scheduled for the end of the year with Astro’s Playroom and Spider-Man : Miles Morales.
