Geoalcali confirms the port of Pasaia as the first option for export

The port of Pasaia Y Geoalcali consolidate the commitment to work in the future through the port of Gipuzkoa, since the company has obtained the concession for the exploitation of the Muga mine, located on the border between the Autonomous Communities of Navarra and Aragon.

It should be remembered that at the beginning of last month, the firm Geoalcali, a subsidiary of Highfield Resources, obtained the exploitation permit for its Mina Muga project, granted by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition in coordination with the mining administrations of Navarra and Aragón. Muga Mine will locate its facilities in the municipality of Sangüesa (Navarra) and the mine in Undués de Lerda (Zaragoza). Developed under the highest environmental and social standards, Muga will cover the notable deficit in potash production that exists in Spain, essential for the fertilization of crops.

In this context, the Pasaia Port Authority has signed a Protocol of Intentions with the Spanish company – dedicated to the exploitation of potash mines – by which Geoalcali consolidates its commitment to operate in the port of Pasaia in the future, recalling that Pasaia is the port of general interest closest to the mines, with which it is connected by highways of the first order.

The mine, which will be developed in two phases, will have an estimated production of 500,000 tons per year of potassium chloride and 500,000 tons per year of salt in the first phase. In the second phase, the estimated annual production will be one million tons per year of potassium chloride and another million of salt. Geoalcali plans to export a substantial part of its production by sea, reaching 700,000 tons per year.

First logistics option

Through the signed agreement, Geoalcali confirms the port of Pasaia as its first option in terms of port logistics as it is the port of general interest closest to the mines with which it is connected by highways of the first order. This commitment covers both the traffic of the first phase of exploitation of the mine, as well as those of the second phase.

Likewise, both entities have acquired the commitment that the handling of said merchandise in the port is carried out guaranteeing zero dust emissions. This protocol will be valid until the signing of a binding contract with a port operator who, in turn, initiates the procedures for the correct operation of said merchandise in the port of Pasaia.
