Geo Barents stopped in Salerno, it’s a battle in court

It has been stuck in the port of Salerno for almost two weeks now. But, after the provision that blocked it for two months notified by the Prefecture for violations of the “Cutro decree”, now the legal battle begins: the NGO “Doctors Without Borders”, in fact, has filed an appeal to the civil court of Salerno to obtain the cancellation of the administrative detention of the Geo Barents, the vessel that last August 26th brought 84 migrants to safety in the port in the shadow of the Castello d’Arechi before being forced to drop anchor. A novelty, that of the appeal to the civil court: on the occasion of other similar provisions, in fact, the NGOs have tried to assert their reasons by filing requests to the TAR. Now, however, the situation is completely different, so much so that it opens up to other scenarios, such as the possible request for compensation for the days the vessel was detained at the port of Salerno, a period in which – according to what MSF has highlighted in recent days – 44 people died in the Mediterranean.
