Gentlemen bishops, mind your own business

Earlier this week, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) advised their flock to shop carefully for their COVID vaccine. The reason: AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson are said to have “used cell lines derived from abortion in their development, production and clinical trials.”

The vaccine has no moral

Here it is a question of morality. It would be “amoral” for these gentlemen (because yes, they’re just gentlemen) in cassocks to be abortion collaborators.

One might be surprised that such a position is taken here in Canada, but is it really that surprising? We remember that the Canadian Bishops continue to have a conservative position on abortion.

Completely moved

Nevertheless, this CECC speaking out on the vaccination campaign is irresponsible when you know who the faithful of their Church are, mostly older people.

When you measure the influence that the clergy once had on the lives of baby boomers and the generations that came before them, it is all the more disturbing to see it reappear in the rearview mirror.

Even in 2021, the Church, and by extension its representatives, continues to exercise its ideological hold over certain people. And who are these people? Often people over the age of 70, the very people who are tried by all means to vaccinate quickly because they are the most likely to develop complications or die from the virus.

The Church was taken out of public space during the Quiet Revolution, so that she could stay in her place and not meddle in state affairs.

If Monsignor Lépine timidly admitted yesterday that the output of the Canadian bishops contained weaknesses, that is not enough. It takes excuses. We have to put things right.

And we are going to say it to ourselves: the Church has missed a great opportunity to be silent.
