The man, Renato Scapusi, unemployed aged 59, was trying to kill himself by launching himself from Mura delle Cappuccine, near the Galliera hospital. He had wandered a few hours in an area not far from the crime scene. The police officers saw him and shouted his name. He replied “it’s me” and never threw himself. He was taken to the police station where he talked about the assault. It emerged that he had undergone psychiatric treatment.
The woman was working in her shop in via Colombo when she was hit with about thirty stab wounds. The police arrived at the scene after the alarm of some passers-by, who also tried to stop the murderer. Their relationship had ended a year ago, but Scapusi had continued to look for her, to call her. She still helped him by giving him money. He, who suffered from gambling addiction, squandered them.
“They had broken up for a few months. He always telephoned her, before he stole them in the house. He had made her a lot and she could no longer bear”, said the cousin who had just arrived at the crime scene, a few steps from the glittering shop windows of via XX September. The woman had also met the victim on the day of the murder: “I had seen her – said the relative – and she seemed calm to me”. Instead, sudden death reached Clara Ceccarreli at the end of the working day.
As always, the woman was tidying up the slipper shop and then waiting for the moment to lower the shutters and go home. However, someone entered Clara’s “Pantofoleria” and attacked her. Some witnesses recognized the ex and immediately put the police officers and mobile investigators on the man’s trail, coordinated by prosecutor Giovanni Arena.
The shopkeeper was shot in the neck and abdomen with blind fury. The murder took place in an hour when the area is very popular with Genoese for the last purchases of the day.
