A major fire broke out on Tuesday at the construction site for the construction of the new bridge instead of the Morandi Viaduct, which collapsed in August 2018. Sparks are said to have set polystyrene on fire. Delays in completion are now feared.

The causes of the controlled fire are still being determined, Italian media reported.
The new bridge should be passable in mid-May. The Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci, who is also the commissioner for the reconstruction of the bridge, recently emphasized that the infrastructure work should be completed in March.

Again and again problems on streets around Genoa
The 40-meter-high and almost 1200-meter-long Polcevera Viaduct, which was also called the Morandi Bridge, collapsed on August 14, 2018, on an approximately 200-meter-long section. The structure was part of the Autobahn 10, known as the “Autostrada dei Fiori”, which is an important connecting road for tourists to the south of France, Piedmont and Lombardy. Hundreds of people became homeless as a result of the accident. They lived in buildings directly under the bridge.
