GENOA (ITALPRESS) – Inter doesn’t shine and comes up short against Genoa. The Marassi match ends 1-1: the goals from Arnautovic and Dragusin were decisive, both scored in the first half. The Nerazzurri postpone winning the winter title; Juventus, playing against Roma tomorrow, will have the chance to get back to -2.
Two key absences for Simone Inzaghi, namely Dimarco and Lautaro Martinez (both present in Genoa to support the team): on the left-handed lane there is space for Carlos Augusto, Arnautovic confirmed in front alongside Thuram. Gilardino instead responded with the usual 3-5-2, with Ekuban and Gudmundsson composing the attacking unit. The hosts started with their foot pressed on the accelerator, while the Nerazzurri struggled to find the right solution in the last sixteen metres: the only shot in the first quarter of an hour came from Thuram, but the header of the Frenchman was intercepted by Martinez. The first half was characterized by a full seven minute suspension due to the home team’s smoke bombs and by a huge stoppage time: as usual, Inter found the goal in the final minutes thanks to Arnautovic’s deflection in front of goal after the post hit from Barella. The home team protested furiously following a push by Bisseck against Strootman which occurred shortly before Inter scored the opening goal.
The reaction was immediate: in the 52nd minute Dragusin equalized with a header after a corner kick from the usual Gudmundsson. In the second half, Inzaghi’s men tried first with Arnautovic – a violent left-footer who finished just wide – then with Acerbi’s header, intercepted by Martinez. A few shocks at the end did not change the result: equal third for Inter, in the next round the Nerazzurri will challenge Verona and will once again try to become winter champions.
