Genk’s Disappointment: Losing in the Champions League with One Man Advantage

“I still can’t believe we’re out of the Champions League. It hasn’t sunk in yet”, was Wouter Vrancken’s first reaction after the loss against Servette.

However, the Swiss had played with a man less for almost 120 minutes, after attacker Crivelli had already torpedoed Bryan Heynen after 2 minutes.

“Certainly if you play the entire match against 10 men, then you just have to finish it”, Vrancken realized. “Would I rather have played 11 against 11, with Heynen? It was not the fault of one man. It was just not good enough in the last 20 meters. We should have finished it.”

However, Genk had plenty of opportunities to do that. “Given our dominance, we should have done more. In and around sixteen, take our responsibility to create moments. Don’t force it, but be ready for those moments.”

Of course it could also be better in the back. With one man less, Servette managed to catch up 2 times. “We wanted to force through the center with that first goal against, so everything was open. That was not necessary at all. And we were wrong with their second goal.”

“Servette is a tough team, we knew that. Still, we should have won here. There was no excuse not to qualify. It is very hard that we are out of the Champions League, especially when you look at the way on which. This was not necessary. That is why it is so bitter.”
