“Genital acne” can affect children into adulthood

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Although it tends to be rarely discussed by the public, a pink pimple-like lump on the genital organs called Molluscum Kontagiosum (MK) can affect anyone regardless of gender and age.

A specialist in skin and genitalia and CEO of Pramudia Clinic, Anthony Handoko, said that MK can attack children aged 2-10 years and adults aged 20-60 years.

“The Constitutional Court is rarely discussed but people who can be affected range-from children to adults. In our clinic, statistically we quite often get patients with MK, 2-4 cases per month, “he said in a Virtual Media Briefing about Molluscum Contagiosum: Annoying genital acne, Wednesday.

If in adults, the disease caused by the pox virus attacks the thin and outermost skin (epidermis) such as the genital area such as the penis, between the testicles, the outer lips of the vagina and the part of the skin where hair grows above the genital organs, in MK children appears on the back, elbow creases, neck and armpit creases.

In terms of appearance, even though MK is a pimple-like lump less than 0.25 inches, there is something unique, namely the dimple in the middle of the bump.

In children, MK is often considered a contagious viral infection that attacks the skin, while in adults the label changes to a sexually transmitted infection (STI), because it can appear with diseases such as genital warts, herpes and others.

Anthony said, the emergence of MK can be experienced by those with decreased immune status, especially those with HIV + and AIDS. There are also reports that say, this disease is also experienced in children with atopic dermatitis but this still needs further research.

The disease is highly contagious with an incubation period of the virus from 2 to 6 months and can be transmitted from person to person through sexual, skin-to-skin contact or simply by touching objects an infected person has touched.

“Sexual contact, non-sexual contact such as holding hands (in the main child), autoinoculation (spreading to other parts of the body due to touching or because the patient scratches the lesion), fomites such as sharing objects such as shared towels, although still only a suspicion, so more accurate research is needed , “said Anthony.

In general, MK will not interfere with health and cause the immune status of the sufferer to decrease, but for people with poor immune status and then exposed to MK, this disease will spread more quickly to other areas of the body.

To prevent infection from the MK virus, apart from avoiding physical contact with sufferers, people need to always maintain health and immunity, and always maintain cleanliness.

The public is urged to immediately consult a doctor for skin and venereal diseases if they find that acne is increasing rapidly around the genital area in adults and around the back, legs, hands and chest in children.
