The Geneva Motor Show began operations on May 29, 1905. It has always been the number one motor show in Europe. Switzerland has the great advantage of not having a national manufacturer which allows it to be recognized as impartial and neutral in the organization of the Show. The allocation of spaces uses an objective criterion, the market share of the various exhibitors. Paris and Frankfurt instead favor the French and German houses. The Geneva Motor Show is easy to visit, from the beginning you can see the end and everything is within reach. Geneva is an iconic, irreplaceable show, definitely the best in Europe. In Geneva everyone starts on equal terms, there are no favorites and the visitors are well above 500,000. There was a gap in the organization due to Covid but this year it resumed on the 26th of this month and will end on March 3rd again in Geneva. In such an uncertain and profound period of change, a massive participation of manufacturers is expected after the Covid interval. This is not the case, the large European producers and the Korean and Japanese producers desert Geneva and leave the showcase to the Chinese producers plus De Meo with Renault and Dacia who will be the only European producers present. A sensational own goal.
The Chinese BYD and SAIC with MG will be present and will attract all the attention of the media and visitors for a week. Renault with strategic sense also participates with the Dacia brand which is growing numerically and qualitatively year after year and from being the cheapest product on the market it is evolving into a manufacturer that offers excellent products at reasonable prices. It becomes really difficult to understand the reasoning made by the absent manufacturers. Cost cutting is generally thought to be the primary reason for not participating in Geneva. This will probably be the reasoning made by the manufacturers in the decision-making phase. The net result is that the abandonment of Geneva leaves a strategic space and an invaluable showcase for two Chinese producers who have long been planning an attack on Europe.
