Geneva: fire in a legendary restaurant in the city center

The Cave Valaisanne, a legendary restaurant in downtown Geneva, has burned down. The fire started on Thursday around 5:44 am at the rear of the establishment, causing significant smoke. The building has been evacuated.

The Fire and Rescue Service of the City of Geneva (SIS) received 30 calls from residents stranded at the windows, said its commander Nicolas Schumacher. The firefighters were on site in two minutes, the barracks being close. Flames came out of the ground floor of the four-story building and the attic space. They reached an apartment on the first floor.

The police immediately blocked the perimeter, in particular Boulevard Georges-Favon. Forty residents were evacuated, including thirteen by the ladder. The wounded nest was installed in the Grütli House of the Arts, which is located at the rear of the damaged building. A few people were transferred to the hospital, mainly for poisoning from smoke.

The fire was under control at 7:00 a.m. A total of 60 firefighters intervened, including 25 volunteers from the City of Geneva. Twelve vehicles have been deployed. An investigation was opened to determine the cause of the incident, the scientific police were on site.

This was the last intervention for SIS first lieutenant Jean-Pierre Zürcher, who is retiring after 34 years of service. In the morning, he will receive honors in the barracks, to the sound of the bagpipes.
