She added that the examination is done by taking a blood sample from the child’s heel and analyzing it in the laboratories of the Egyptian Center for Disease Control and Control (Egyptian CDC), which is equipped with the latest international equipment in the field of detecting genetic diseases, explaining that if the sample is positive, the child is referred for a confirmatory test. For her part, Dr. Nanis Abdel Mohsen, coordinator of the Early Detection of Genetic Diseases Initiative, said that 42 centers have been allocated to treat genetic diseases in newborns, in cooperation with the Supreme Council of University Hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and successive expansion is underway in these centers to include all governorates of the Republic, explaining These centers provide treatment and periodic follow-up services “free of charge” to children who suffer from any hereditary diseases, to help them live their lives normally, in addition to providing support and counseling services to parents, to reduce the possibility of having children with any hereditary diseases.
